SG Emmett & Son Cake Tins' Care & Seasoning Instructions

SG Emmett & Son's cake tins are lovingly handcrafted in Cygnet, Tasmania, using traditional techniques. Built to last, these high-quality tins will serve you well for many years with proper seasoning and care. Each tin is coated with a thin layer of cooking oil to protect it prior to purchase.

Meet the makers and delve into the history and craftsmanship behind the tins in this article.

Below are some tips on caring, using and seasoning your SG Emmett & Son's cake tins.

Cleaning

Hand wash with warm water and mild soap or detergent. Avoid harsh abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, and dishwashers. Do not soak for extended periods. Dry thoroughly in a warm oven.

Using

When using the cake tins, line them with baking paper to help prevent sticking.

Seasoning

To season your cake tin, apply a light coating of olive, flax, or vegetable oil, then wipe off the excess to leave a very thin layer—too much oil can cause a sticky finish. Place the tin upside down in a cold oven, then heat to 230–260°C. Bake for 20 minutes, then allow it to cool completely. For best results, repeat the process 2–3 times.

Why do my cake tins need seasoning?

SG Emmett & Son's cake tins are crafted from tin-plated steel and require seasoning to prevent rust, thus extending their lifespan, and to develop a natural non-stick surface.
